RANS Alterra 29
By BRYAN J. BALL Managing Editor Lately, I’ve had a hankering to get back out in the dirt. “Just put some fat tires on a full suspension recumbent and have it,” you may say. Well, I used to race mountain bikes on the NORBA circuit and haven’t ever been truly satisfied with pure recumbents for […]

Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
Twist shifters can be well-nigh impossible to effect a gear change if one gets caught in the rain (unless wearing gloves with a grippy surface).
Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
For shifting I prefer bar-end shifters, but I do miss being able to fit mirrors, GPS etc here :-(
Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
Looks like I stick with the twist then for now because it also has 2 Mirrycle mirrors already mounted
Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
Oh - another thing in favour of twist grips - they make mounting a Mirrycle mirror on the end of the handlebars a lot easier. There are other places to mount mirrors of course...
Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
I'd just give the twisties a go for a while first - they'll probably be fine. It's not a particularly hard job changing over but might involved new grips and also possibly new gear cables - length might need to be different...
If it's a new trike or from a dealer I'm sure you could amend the order - doubt they'll have got too far with it between Sat night and Monday morning :-)
Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
Oh dear :( So the next question, as I did something very stupid after drinking last night is how easy is it to switch the twist grip system to bar ends ?
Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
Good point about the mittens!
We need a twist grip advocate to come up with some points in their favour now :-)
I will say that bar ends are quite easily accidentally knocked as you carry or fold or get into the trike - twist grips in contrast are pretty much immune to accidental operation.
Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
I'd also choose bar end shifters. I haven't had experience of twist shift on a trike, but can say that I'm more than satisfied with bar ends.
I do have a twist shift on my semi-recumbent and find some difficulty in winter when riding in my mitts. It's just more clumsy. I would imagine this would exacerbate any steering issues (as outlined above).
Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
I'd say not on a direct steer trike Peter. I found steering while changing gear on the Trail more than 'interesting with twisties and easy with bar ends.
Re: Twist shift or Bar end shifters ?
I prefer them (bar end shifters) too - but just a personal preference really.
